Review of Unknown 9 Awakening
Following a preview hosted by Bandai Namco, we conducted a comprehensive test of the game. In general, we have conflicting opinions regarding it. Because the game doesn’t appear to be finished, it has a complex graphic style, similar to Forspoken. We’re left wanting more on that score, anyway.
However, in terms of how it approaches the genre, the gameplay is gratifying. It’s quite instinctive, although it does require some getting accustomed to. As the chapters go on, we enjoy using the variety of powers at our disposal to sneak into different places. As you acquire new skills, infiltration gets more fluid and engaging, making the entire experience incredibly pleasurable.
Well-planned, the “Passage” lets you combine multiple skills including telekinesis, invisibility, and astral projection (Unknown 9 style). These have an intriguing “Doctor Strange” feel to them (for instance, when you turn invisible, you make movements fit for Marvel’s Wizard). Although the gameplay is intriguing, there isn’t much variation because our character constantly moves between infiltration and moving scenarios. We had noted this in our preview, and this confirms it.
Nevertheless, Unknown 9 Awakening is still a worthwhile piece of freeware. Fans of magical single-player adventure games will surely enjoy this game… To decide for yourself, all you need to do now is wait for the game’s release!
A Very Familiar Story
Regretfully, Unknown 9: Awakening’s narrative doesn’t quite live up to its looks. I received the impression that everything that happened in the game’s plot had been seen a hundred times before, albeit perhaps with greater execution. Considering the fascinating setup that is presented at the start of the encounter, this seems like a waste.
All that remained in Unknown 9: Awakening, even after the credits rolled, was a generic and unmemorable experience. With nothing truly noteworthy to say, it feels like one of the post-Endgame MCU films, only going through the motions. Even as the story was coming to an end, I was already starting to lose track of what had happened.
Character animations throughout gameplay aren’t particularly noteworthy. One thing that lets you know you’re not playing a AAA game is the basic crouch, jump, and run animations you see here. The combat isn’t much improved, which is frustrating. Although it works, it occasionally feels a little stiff and ungainly, and neither the gameplay nor the visuals are appealing. The player never feels fully in control of Stealth since it is erratic and disorganized.
