Xbox Game Studios and Stoic are the developers of the upcoming free-to-play side-scrolling action-adventure game Towerborne. An early access version is set to launch on September 10th, 2024, with a full release for Windows and Xbox Series X/S in 2025.
About Towerborne
With monsters waiting just outside the tower’s walls, the Belfry stands as a ray of hope and safety amid the remains of humanity and the City of Numbers. You are an Ace, resurrected from the spirit world with the abilities, grit, and will to keep the Belfry community safe. You are meant to fight, especially with spirit allies at your side.
Gameplay
Beat ’em ups served as the inspiration for the side-scrolling action-adventure game Towerborne. The post-apocalyptic fantasy setting of the game is called the City of Numbers, and monsters overrun it. The Aces, the heroes of Towerborne, are tasked with reclaiming lost lands. The game’s hub world, the Belfry, is where Aces can be customized.
The weapon types available to players are War Clubs, Gauntlets, Dual Daggers, Swords, and Shields, but they are not restricted to any particular playstyle. The overworld map in the game is hexadecimal. Players will encounter new enemy types and mission opportunities as they explore the game’s world and open up more hexes. The four-player cooperative multiplayer mode in the game is supported both locally and online.
Development
Xbox Game Studios is the publisher and Stoic is in charge of the development of Towerborne. The Unreal Engine was used in the game’s development, and animated feature films served as inspiration for the visual design. The game was originally intended to be a 2D game similar to The Banner Saga series, but it was eventually extended to have additional axes of movement.
In contrast to The Banner Saga, the game has a more upbeat tone. The team characterized the tower of Belfry as “a beacon of hope and safety amongst the ruins of humanity and the City of Numbers,” even though the game takes place in a post-apocalyptic world.
First leaked in October 2021, the game was known by the codename Project Belfry. During the Xbox Games Showcase on June 11, 2023, the game was formally announced. Stoic originally intended Towerborne to be a live-service game, with the studio hoping to add more content after the game’s official release. It was revealed on August 20, 2024, that the game would launch in early access for Windows in September 2024, with a free-to-play release scheduled for 2025.

Towerborne Trailers
Residents are seen in The Belfry looking for safety in the Towerborne announcement trailer, and the four characters depart to investigate the area around the tower. A wolf, some eerie-looking mushrooms, and a frog-like creature are among the visible enemies. The map appears to be organized in a grid when it zooms out, suggesting that we might be able to take control of and neutralize certain regions so that people feel secure enough to leave the tower.
The game was not mentioned during the Xbox Showcase 2024 stream, and there haven’t been any new trailers since the announcement last year, but later this summer, more information is being hinted at by the Towerborne X account (formerly Twitter).
Is Towerborne multiplayer?
Indeed, you can play Towerborne in online cooperative mode with up to three friends or alone, gathering allies to accompany you on your travels through the area around The Belfry and aid in battling enemies.
