Dragon Age Veilguard is an upcoming action role-playing game being developed by Electronic Arts and BioWare. The fourth major game in the Dragon Age series, The Veilguard, will be a sequel to Dragon Age: Inquisition (2014).
Ten years after the Inquisition, the game allows the player to discover entirely new regions within the fictional Thedas universe. Dragon Age Veilguard is anticipated to launch on October 31, 2024, for Windows, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.
Since the game’s inception in 2015, there have been numerous significant design revisions, protracted delays, and a high employee turnover rate. In June 2024, the game’s new title, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, replaced the original 2022 announcement of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.
Gameplay
Previously, a player’s previous world state could be imported from save files or the online application Dragon Age Veilguard Keep; however, in Veilguard, players will be able to alter their world state while creating a character.
Game Director Corinne Busche stated in June 2024 that this was necessary since “the technology is so different” and they wanted it to be a part of the official game client. The player can select a fighting class (warrior, mage, or rogue), a lineage (human, dwarf, elf, or qunari), and a backstory for their character associated with one of six factions when creating their character.
Creative Director John Epler clarified that “this faction choice comes in the same spirit as the Origin choice in the original game” in response to GamesRadar+’s report, saying it is “definitely intended to be that throwback.” Although it’s different and lacks the special missions, it still determines your character’s path for the remainder of the game.”
Body size and part sliders are included in the customization options, unlike in previous games. They are not “tied to the voice or pronouns” (she/her, he/him, or they/them) that the player selects.
Busche also revealed that although not every character from the previous Dragon Age Veilguard will make an appearance in the game, some will be “woven into” it. Players will be able to recreate their Inquisitor from Dragon Age Veilguard: Inquisition.

Companions
As IGN noted, “Busche pushes back on the idea that The Veilguard’s companions are ‘player,’ a term used to describe games where NPCs are specifically only attracted to the player character.” In contrast to the Inquisition.
Though the combat system will also limit the combat party size to three, there will still be seven companion options. “The successful “shift from tactical strategy to real-time action” that the Dragon Age Veilguard series has made is highlighted by Game Informer in their description of Veilguard’s pause-and-play gameplay mechanic, which is similar to Inquisition’s but without the floating camera view.
“Veilguard has a “hub-and-spoke design” as opposed to an open world; players will navigate Thedas through the Eluvian network, with some areas being larger than others and “others being smaller and more focused on linear storytelling.”
Factions (The Veilguard)
Dragon Age: Veilguard offers six factions to choose from when creating a character: Antivan Crows, Grey Wardens, Lords of Fortune, Mourn Watch, Shadow Dragons, and Veil Jumpers. The reason they came to travel with Varric rather than their faction and how they met him are all determined by Rook’s faction.
Every faction grants you three different buffs and has a unique set of casual clothes that are worn during specific cutscenes. These factions also stand in for actual world organizations that Rook needs to approach for assistance; it appears that a reputation system keeps track of Rook’s standing with each particular faction. Every specialization has a faction attached to it.
- Mourn Watch
- Veil Jumpers
- Antivan Crows
- Grey Wardens
- Lords of Fortune
- Shadow Dragons
Dragon Age Veilguard Release Date
The release date of Dragon Age Veilguard is set for October 31, 2024. In June 2022, the official title was revealed, and it was verified that the game would not be released in that same year. The game’s release date was delayed until 2024 due to internal delays and staff turnover, which included layoffs at BioWare.
